Like other developing countries, television started in India very late i.e. in 1959. Initially, television programs were broadcast on an experimental basis in Delhi with the help of small transmitters. In 1960, educational television programs began to be broadcast instead of evening programs. The first large-scale educational programs were broadcast by satellite in 1975-76.
This was done by a broadcast site, using a satellite called Ats-6. This was a sociological experiment, such experiments were done in many countries of the world at that time. Such programs were broadcast live in 2400 villages in six states of India. The six states, which included Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa, mostly focused on health, health and family planning.
After the advent of INSAT in 1983, educational programs of different types and levels of education began to be broadcast in most parts of the country. In the nineties, tele-education expanded due to the Zabua Developmental Communication Project and the Training and Developmental Communication Channel. On January 26, 2002, Doordarshan and Indira Gandhi National Open University launched a completely independent educational television channel.
